Solitons and BPS States in String Theory and Field Theory
BPS states in string theory and field theory have a rich structure and provide powerful probes of weak-strong coupling dualities. The fact that string theories can have an infinite tower of perturbative BPS states was first discovered in work with Atish Dabholkar and has played an important role in providing evidence for various weak-strong coupling dualities in string theory. Curt Callan, Andy Strominger and I found the CFT that describes fivebranes in string theory and did early work on the structure of the six-dimensional theories that govern the low-energy excitations on these objects. The two papers with Greg Moore on Algebras and BPS states introduced a new technique into mathematics now called the singular theta lift or the Harvey-Moore-Borcherds lift and also provided an early indication of the connection between sheaves and D-branes.
